Agile Jkl

Back in home city. Reaktor, Digia and Tekes are announcing enlightenment of software engineering in seminar going on in Jyväskylä University. The subject is of course Lean management, communication and making work joyful. Roman Smirak told good examples from their company Tieto. Information work is a very different from traditional product delivering industry. Hermanni Hyytiälä told about System Conditions. His message was to get away from command-and-control mgmt and evolve the management so that thinking changes and affects the design and management of the work. Marko Taipale talked about start-ups and why business plan is not good idea, but instead we should make Business models, check web-site.

Day two in Gent, subject Android programming

Basics of Android programming squeezed in one day. Not very well planned from my side. The students learned graphical and debugging tools of SDK, but we had only very little time to do actual programming, which is always much more motivating. We make a simple game where we used media player and accelerometer. Again comments will be or I am anticipating them to be found from blogs:

Social Media in Mobile device

On Wednesday I was giving a lecture and workshop on subject Social Media in Mobile device. The subject is more or less familiar for me, but place was not. I am at the moment in Belgium, Gent. I gathered information of different social media applications like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, qik, bambuser, Blogger which I am now using and future trends. After short theory lesson we had workshop where students tried these applications. I could not help it but I had to mention the way Facebook collects and keeps the user data. Student comments can be found from Blogger pages:

We discussed also about different mobile operating systems and I made survey what operating system is they are using. On the left you can find the results.

Result depends on methods

As a lecturer I have obligation supervising pre-graduation thesis'. I have supervised now about fifteen thesis'. Students in this applied university are capable of making good research and all the subjects have been interesting. Most of the subjects fall in to category software engineering which is also my expertise. I have to excuse the first students that I was guiding, I was focusing quite a lot the outlook and structure. When understanding goes a bit further I have noticed that although research has made well and all the necessary steps are made for beliavable result the first planning HOW research is done and WHAT METHODS are used is the key to good result. This is seen especially in the case-studies. The result of the research varies a lot when it is done iteratively or in phases. I wish that students take few hours thinking the ways they are researching the subject, because it really matters.
